Family
Friends & Staff -- all mashed
together cuz we can't separate it either!
We really,
seriouslywere
going to just be this tiny family owned & operated fruit
stand! But it quickly became much more than Mom, Dad & I
could handle! When we opened-we were bombarded. We were
shocked, horrified, flattered, broke, hysterical, exhausted, confused,
-- we were suddenly "in the restaurant business"! At that point we knew
we were going to need help - and lots of
it!
We have been so, soooo
lucky to have attracted the most wonderful, outgoing & service
oriented people to work with us. They've truly become like family -- so, when
people ask, I tell 'em we're still "family owned &
operated" and we want you to leave feeling like you've just left our home
& become a friend of the family at the same time. That's one of the
reasons that, when we're crazy busy--I'll grab ya and put ya to work pourin'
orange juice or sumpthin! If we're too crazy to git somethin' for ya - I'll
tell ya where it is & tell ya to grab it! Don't laugh! I'm totally
serious! I'm not shy - and don't YOU be either! We utilize everyone we can
when it gets THAT busy. If I spot someone in line that's a
"regular"... I'll tell 'em to be "in charge" and show/tell
others in line "what to do". It's great. And - it's certainly a
"unique experience"! (To me...I 'liken' it to the feeling of being
at a friends house after she made dinner and I get up and help her in the
kitchen with the dishes. It's that relaxed, down-home feeling. Nothing uptight
& overscheduled.) We don't inventory the pies or
weigh out the fries. We don't need a "supervisor" to give the
"ok" to take care of a problem. We hire wonderful people who love
what they do & care about our business the way we do - and trust 'em to do
the job. We empower them to make people
happy - just like Mom, Dad & I would. We just can't be everywhere at all
times, but we've found ourselves surrounded by wonderful friends/family/staff
that can. (And--hey! They work their country butts
off -- so be good to 'em, will ya?!) So...even if Mom, Dad & I
aren't in the forefront when you get here...we're still around. But you're
still in good, young, energetic, trusted hands! Relax & enjoy
the floor show. It gits real gooooood! :) And if
it gets crazy?! Feel free to jump on in! :) You're hired!
Kari
Sorensen aka "ME" :)
Yep. That's me. (But I ain't blonde anymore - bought a house & don't
wannna' put money in-ta my head anymore! No more bleachin!!) I 'm pretty much "in" all
the time we're open. What do I do? Gads! Where to start?! I'm in the office
quite a bit, but that's at the back of the dining area - you'll see me. Door's
always open. I handle all the books, taxes, accounting, developing recipes, cost
& pricing analysis, pickin' my nose, hiring/firing, payroll, advertising/PR/POS, web design, menu layout
& design, deposits,
training, scheduling, program development for u-pick, etc. When it gets to be "crazy busy" - I go jump on the
register. Well - not "on" the register. I take
orders up front (...although I have been
known to jump up on the front counter in heels. What?! I gotta git
ya'all to listen-up somehow!)
Roger
Sorensen aka 'DAD'
Dad's in & out during the day handling all the agriculture & all sorts
of other stuff. When he gets time, He'll sit & chat with folks. It's
absolutely one of the most important things he does. He welcomes people. He'll
sit & have a cup of coffee or go grab lunch with a table of people. We all
actually try to when the day allows it. We love that contact.
They've still got apples too so Dad's out
goofin' off in the orchard too. He wanted' da yank 'em this spring and be DONE
with apples forever, but Mom wanted "just one
more year"..."it COULD turn around...and "what
if?" You hate to see years of endless work go (literally) up in smoke. It's a heartbreaking
quandary. We find that Blueberries
are MUCH better & we're planting more of 'em every year! He's
out doin' that too!
Linda
Sorensen aka
'MOM'
Mom's in & out during the day too. She'll be in the kitchen BAKIN' PIES,
downstairs workin' on retail stuff, or outside workin' on the
flowers. She's the "flower lady". Wait till you see 'em -
they're absolutely gorgeous!
Speaking of
"Pies"...in the summer 2005 we
sold over 3,000 whole pies! And that doesn't even count all the
slices of pie we sell for people to eat here. That's a whole
lotta' rollin'! She can only do so many before she's gotta'
quit outta' sheer exhaustion! (Pepe to the rescue!) As if summer isn't
crazy enough, we've also got a vacation home, Quail
Haven, that sleeps 20+ in beds with its own gorgeous pool. It's a monster.
So she's over cleanin' & handling stuff there too.
Pepe
aka Jose Hernandez
Without hesitation - Pepe is absolutely a
part of our family & we're keeping him! He's been with us nearly the
entire time we've been open. He handles the entire back/kitchen of our
operation -- Cooking. Production. Training. Inventory Control:
"Ruben-stop eating all the quiche!!" Food Orders. He's one in a
million & I know Mom & Dad would agree. He is wonderful and
we are so grateful that he's here with us. Thank you - thank you,
thank you, Pepe! We love you. (Hey - Did I mention that Pepe
JUST got married in March?! Is that a blush I detect?!
;)
Details
- I need details...!!
Ruben
Eulogio
Ruben's been
with us for a couple of years now. He's one of our
awesome cooks. He's ALWAYS smiling and happy and I'm not exaggerating!
He makes it look soooo easy!! It's amazing to watch 'em work - food's
a-flyin'! We've got a really open kitchen so you can take in "the
show". He's great! We love having him here and couldn't do it without
him -- we wouldn't even wanna' try!!
Gramma
Carol Peters
Gramma's here for a bit almost every day. She'll be on the sofa chattin'
with people, or sometimes she sets in her Subaru Outback & watches
people or read the paper for a spell. Most a' the stuff I write comes
out of my head in her voice. She's a hoot! Yep. That's Gramma.
Everyone calls her Gramma & ya'all can call her Gramma too. By the
way - she gits to park anywhere she wants, so quit'cher bellyachin'.
This is her old stompin' ground & she's more-then-likely been out
runnin' our errands & has a whole bunch'a junk to haul in the Barn.
So
git off yer city butts & help 'er out if ya' see her out
there! That's GRAMMA!
Grampa
Paul Peters
Grampa's here every day. Without fail. I feel his presence here so
strongly.
We lost Grampa 2.5 years
ago. He had an accident in his shed that all this wonderful stuff came
out of. He is missed so terribly. He was such a goofball.
Too hard to finish this one right now. I'll have to come back.
