BLUEBERRIES....It rained. And it rained and rained and friggin' rained. And we've had a really cool spring. So, all bets are off. We were 2 weeks ahead, now we're...well. Frankly, we've got no idea. We're shootin' for having ripe blueberries for U-PICK around the 1st week of July. We think. ;)

FLOWER FARM...We've got 2.5 acres of the most gorgeous peony flowers that are in full bloom! We're pickin'em and bringin' em up to the barn. OR you can U-PICK a gorgeous bouquet yourselves. $5 for a huge bundle.

STRAWBERRIES....They're RIPE!! This is the 2nd year they're in the ground and that means they're growing like CRAZY -- and those plants are absolutely STUFFED with ripe, beautiful strawberries! We've only got 4 rows, so they CAN get picked out at times, but they're everbearing and will be coming on all the way through Fall. Only $1.50 a lb! Come 'n git'em!!

4/4/10

BLUEBERRIES....Before we talk about the upcoming crop, we need to address some pretty strange weather patterns we've been experiencing. We're in the midst of one of the mildest winters on record. Ok - as far as I can remember. ;) That counts for somethin.

There are several issues of concern regarding such a warm winter. First, the plants need to remain dormant for a certain number of hours in other to produce a successful crop. We think that part shouldn't be a problem, but it's something for us to keep in mind. Next, this low snow pack will likely greatly affect our water levels here in the Lake Chelan Valley. People think because we sit on the banks of one of the deepest, naturally occurring, glacial fed, fresh water lakes in the United States, that it's unlikely that we would ever have water shortages in our area.  It couldn't be more untrue. Because we are located in North Central Washington State, we are considered "High Dessert". That means we get severe seasons. We get very HOT summers and extremely COLD winters. (You should see a local woman's wardrobe. It makes no sense at all. No wonder we're always short on closet space. We have a lot to consider -- so back off!)

What this means for our operation is that harvest is going to be a bit trickier than usual to predict. Some of the old local apple farmers are predicting crops to be at least 2 weeks early. So - that means that when we typically start picking the last week in June...we may be picking ripe blueberries the second week in June. But no worries. I'll keep you posted.

Speaking of keeping your posted...

I DO A LIVE RADIO BROADCAST EVER SATURDAY @ 9:30
...live on our local radio station.  KOZI RADIO'S "2nd Cup Of Coffee" program rocks. If you haven't heard it -- you're missing the boat. And even if you don't live locally, you can listen live over the internet. Just go to KOZI.COM and click "listen live".  The program is actually on every morning from 8:45-10:30

When we do start pickin' we will have nearly a 6 week window of pickin' berries. We may also be picking raspberries, blackberries & strawberries as well...

To give you an idea of when we were pickin' specific varieties of fruits & berries, check out our
2006 Chelan Valley Ripe FRUIT TIMELINE.

We started PICKING Blueberries on
Wednesday, July 7, 2008 and harvest ended on August 29, 2008.

A "typical" year of picking...blueberries normally start the last week in June and continue through the first week in August.

Summer 2008 started out with pretty cool weather, so it caused the crop to come on later than it normally would in 2008.

It was a fantastic crop, the bushes were totally burdened with lots and lots of huge gorgeous blueberries. People came with friends and family and picked. They had a blast. So did we. It was a really great season full of lots of friendly, wonderful people. THANK YOU! :)
